#1: Building a business and life you love
I know you’re probably here just for the strategy, but if you’ve seen any of my other posts or read my book, you know that for me, mindset and money go hand in hand. You can be wildly successful without having a life you love. But most of us want to “have it all”, and I’m here to tell you that you can.
To create a business that truly fulfills you, you need to start with the end in mind. Ask yourself:
- What do you really want out of life?
- Is it the ability to travel more?
- Is it having time to connect with loved ones?
- Or is it making a genuine impact on the world?
- Do I simply want to be my own boss?
- Retire my partner?
By answering these questions honestly, you can build your business to support your dreams from the start.
It’s essential to leverage the freedom you’ve created in your business to thrive. Don’t fall into the trap of delaying gratification. Take that afternoon off to strategize or that month-long trip you’ve been dreaming about. Remember, you started your business for more freedom – it’s your responsibility to use it.
#2: Being an embodied entrepreneur
Again, I know you’re not stumbling onto this post because you care about embodiment. Some of you are naturally great at embodying the success mindset that it takes to scale a business. My friend and colleague John needed one mindset conversation with me five years ago and has since gone on to grow a $90k cash monthly business, with very little help from me. For some of us, embodying success doesn’t take much effort.
Embodiment is crucial for creating a business that feels authentic and aligned with your values. What you do for success matters, but mostly because what you do impacts who you become.
Embodiment means being fully present and connected to your physical, emotional, and mental self while engaging in business activities. This connection can lead to increased awareness, improved communication, and better stress management.
To become more embodied, focus on integrating new beliefs with your nervous system. This process helps make positive mindset changes stick. Practice being present in your body, acknowledging your physical sensations, and connecting your thoughts and emotions to your physical experiences.
Strategic Planning and Goal Setting with small business coaching services
#3: Defining your business vision
Your business vision is the foundation of your strategic planning. It’s your goal for what your business will be in the future, aligning with your aspirations. A powerful vision statement captures the key elements of success and provides direction for your team. To create one, consider your business’s purpose and importance. Ask yourself: What products or services do you provide? What do you want to achieve? Your vision should be clear, concise, and inspiring.
#4: Setting goals and intentions
With your vision in place, it’s time to set SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) goals. These objectives serve as a roadmap, guiding your business towards success. Short-term goals, typically spanning a year or less, address urgent needs. Long-term goals are broader and take longer to accomplish. Both should interconnect in your strategy, with short-term goals acting as stepping stones towards your larger objectives.
#5: Creating actionable plans
An action plan is crucial for turning your goals into reality. It should offer specific tactical actions that deliver on your strategic objectives. Present your plan as a one-page spreadsheet listing initiatives by function. Include key performance indicators, responsible team members, and timelines for each action. Allocate appropriate resources and specify measures to track implementation. Remember, your action plan should be flexible and responsive to changes. Regularly ask for feedback from your team and be prepared to revise actions or priorities as needed.
Financial Management and Growth
#6: Cash flow optimization
Cash is the lifeblood of your business. Without proper cash flow management, you could be profitable on paper yet still face bankruptcy. To optimize your cash flow, start by implementing best practices for working capital management. Create a structured approach that includes forecasting and regular reviews. This will provide liquidity to sustain operations and fund growth during good times while adding stability during challenges.
Focus on three key areas: receivables, payables, and inventory. For receivables, set clear payment terms and have an efficient billing process. With payables, negotiate terms upfront and optimize payment timing. For inventory, define minimal levels and monitor demand patterns.
#7: Hunting versus gardening strategies for sales
In sales, you can adopt either a hunting or farming approach. Hunting involves aggressively pursuing new clients through cold calls and networking events. It’s ideal for quick expansion or entering new markets. Farming, on the other hand, focuses on nurturing existing customer relationships. This approach is suited for businesses with an established client base aiming to optimize lifetime customer value.
#8: Profit maximization strategies
To maximize profits, you need to strike a balance between increasing revenue and decreasing costs. Start by understanding your margins – the difference between your costs and prices. Optimize your pricing strategy, considering factors like supply and demand. Implement lean business processes to reduce unnecessary costs and boost efficiency. Remember, profit maximization allows you to reinvest in growth, navigate economic challenges, and attract investors.
Marketing and Customer Acquisition
To skyrocket your small business growth, you need to focus on effective marketing and customer acquisition strategies. By implementing a minimalist approach, you can create a powerful impact without overwhelming yourself or your audience.
#9: The Minimalist Marketing Plan
The best marketing plan involves ensuring that you bring prospects naturally from awareness, through a sale, and into the results they want.
There are many versions of a one page marketing plan that accomplish that. The one I created in the Minimalist Marketing Plan was inspired by Ryan Deiss from Digital Marketer.
My one page minimalist marketing plan includes:
- awareness
- engagement
- subscription
- conversion
- excitement
- referral

Create a content strategy that’s clear, concise, and impactful. Focus on producing quality content that speaks directly to your ideal client’s needs.
Remember, even dedicating just 30 minutes a day, five days a week, can yield significant results.
#10: Developing a Strong Brand Identity
Your brand identity is more than just a logo. It’s the personality of your business and a promise to your customers. Develop a consistent visual identity, including your color palette, typography, and overall design esthetic. This consistency helps build recognition and trust with your audience.
Create a brand voice that reflects your values and resonates with your target market. Use this voice consistently across all your marketing materials, from your website to your social media profiles.
#11: Creating Effective Marketing Campaigns
When crafting your marketing campaigns, focus on simplicity and clarity. Use a mix of techniques to attract, engage, and convert users into paying customers. Leverage content marketing at every stage of the customer acquisition funnel, from awareness to retention.
Embrace email marketing to build relationships with new customers and keep prospects engaged. Share customer testimonials and user-generated content to provide social proof and build trust in your brand.
Remember, a minimalist approach to marketing can help you cut through the noise and create memorable customer experiences. By focusing on what truly matters, you can achieve impressive results without overwhelming yourself or your audience.
Leadership and Team Development
#12: Enhancing leadership skills: the coaching habit
To boost your leadership skills, adopt a coaching mindset. Ask powerful questions that open the door to learning what others really think and feel. This approach helps you understand your team’s perspectives and fosters a culture of growth. By cultivating emotional intelligence, you’ll better interpret and respond to others’ emotions, which is crucial for effective leadership.
#13: Building high-performing teams
As a leader, create a strong sense of purpose and direction for your team. Set clear objectives and priorities, and establish milestones to measure progress. Encourage open communication and cross-functional cooperation. Build trust by being genuine and transparent with your team members. Invest in training and professional development to help your employees grow and adapt to changing industry needs.
Hire Slow and Fire Fast
Take your time when hiring to ensure candidates are qualified and fit well with your organization. However, if someone isn’t working out, act swiftly to avoid disrupting the team’s goals. This approach demonstrates your commitment to maintaining a high-performing team and respecting your company’s mission.
#14: Implementing effective communication strategies
Communicate relentlessly and set clear expectations for your team. Use stories to illustrate your ideas and make them more memorable. Practice active listening and encourage input from all team members. Be prepared to have difficult conversations when needed, and involve others before developing action plans. These strategies will help you build a culture of open, effective communication within your organization.
