How long does it take to make money with a blog?
Most new and aspiring bloggers would love to receive a definitive answer, but the truth is – it depends on a few things.
The good news is I’ve put together some pointers to help gauge how soon your blog will be making money, and how you can influence this timeframe with strategy, niche, depth of understanding and mindset.

Strategy
Here we are focused on the marketing strategy and the energy you put into it.
The more direct sales you are willing to do, the more likely you will be able to increase your income with a small audience.
In my recent post, How to Monetize a Small Audience, I mentioned that my first 5-figure month was with an audience of 300. This shocks people, and it definitely wasn’t an easy thing to do, but it is very possible.
It involved a lot of action that might feel uncomfortable, especially for introverts that don’t want to make videos or constantly have to reach out to people individually.
My strategy involved:
- recording live videos
- warming people up
- direct outreach
- sales calls
- high ticket offers
Stay open to other ways of making money!
There are a ton of tactics and strategies you can use to increase your income faster.
I’m a big fan of doing things in innovative ways. In my Monetization Accelerator Program the goal in that 6-week program is to make money for all my clients.
Niche
Some niches are slightly easier to monetize than others, but this is not to encourage you to create limiting beliefs around your niche!
People will often charge less for niches that do not help others make money, but this should not be the case. If you’re helping people out, you should be confident in what you are offering.
Depth of Understanding
What do I mean by this?
I’m thinking of your knowledge of your niche, what your potential clients are looking for and blogging in general.
If you have never blogged before, and have no idea what a blog is, naturally it will take you longer to monetize in comparison to someone who has an existing blog.
However, it’s actually really common for people to blog for years without seeing any revenue, because of their lack of tactic, niche, strategy, mindset, openness and depth of understanding. It doesn’t need to be that way – it is more than possible to make money within the first few months of launching a blog, which is how I coach my clients.
To do this, you will need a depth of understanding of your avatar.
Originally, Alison’s Notebook was launched to build awareness for paintings I was selling; when I decided to make my blog more of a business, I had to decide on a niche. Being a blogger myself, I was able to gain a depth of understanding of my avatar and that is when it became much easier to sell things.
Mindset
If you don’t think your offer is worth selling, your avatar won’t believe it’s worth buying.
“Sales is a transfer of confidence.”
You can still see revenue when you are doubting yourself…
…but you are much more likely to make money when people can see and feel your confidence in yourself and what you’re selling. Mindset is huge when you are trying to monetize your blog.
Another reason your mindset is important is because when you have a success mindset, you will tend to be more open to new and different ways to make money.
You can take control of when you will be making money!
Once you make that commitment to yourself, your actions will follow, you will take risks and believe in yourself more.
Earning money in any business is dependent on your strategy, niche, depth of understanding and mindset.
I’ve had clients make money in days, and I’ve also had clients take months to start earning money.
